X Announces New Subscription Plan Not a Bot introducing $1 Fee for New Users in Testing Phase recently revealed plans to charge new users accessing its platform, now referred to as 'Not a Bot.'
The company initiated trials of this subscription plan in New Zealand and the Philippines starting October 17th, 2023.
Under this program, new users are required to pay an annual fee of $1, enabling them to post tweets, retweet, save bookmarks, and like posts after verifying their phone numbers. Users declining to pay will have restricted 'read-only' access.
This move aims to curb spam, platform manipulation, and bot activity. While the fees are not applicable to existing users, there is speculation that X might extend these charges universally.
Elon Musk hinted at mandatory payments as a measure to combat bots and spam, aligning with his ambition to transform X into a comprehensive application akin to China's WeChat. Musk's interest in users' credit card information aligns with his broader goal of expanding into banking and offering financial services through X.
