Discover why this supposed remedy for an eye infection was causing individuals to lose their sight |
The Punjab government has given the multinational pharmaceutical company, responsible for importing and manufacturing Avastin injection, a clean bill of health.
During a press conference, Punjab's Interim Health Minister, Dr. Javed Akram, stated that the injections were contaminated during transportation due to rainwater mixing in refilled vials or syringes during bus cargo services.
Despite this contamination, Avastin will continue to be used in cancer treatment, but its use for eye treatment will be temporarily suspended.
A committee of ophthalmologists will establish guidelines to determine Avastin's future use in eye treatment. Dr. Akram shared that 66 individuals, mainly in Southern Punjab, experienced adverse effects from these injections due to improper transportation methods, where rainwater entered the luggage compartments of buses and contaminated the injections.
