On Thursday, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, introduced a 39-member advisory panel focused on addressing global challenges related to artificial intelligence governance.

This diverse group includes leaders from technology companies, government officials from Spain to Saudi Arabia, and academics from countries like the United States, Russia, and Japan.

Notable tech figures such as Hiroaki Kitano from Sony, Mira Murati from OpenAI, and Natasha Crampton from Microsoft are part of this esteemed panel.

The advisory board includes representatives from six continents, showcasing diverse expertise from AI expert Vilas Dhar in the US to Professor Yi Zeng in China and Egyptian legal expert Mohamed Farahat. In a statement, Guterres highlighted the transformative potential of AI for good and expressed concerns about its malicious use, which could erode trust in institutions and democracy.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, introduced last year, has garnered global attention, prompting discussions among researchers and policymakers about its societal impact.

With governments working on AI legislation, there's a call for international cooperation. The United Nations panel plans to release preliminary recommendations by the end of this year, followed by the final set in the summer of 2024.
