Apple has devised a novel approach to update iPhones to the latest iOS version, even before they leave the retail packaging. While software updates are crucial for security and new features, automatic updates can feel intrusive, especially if users want to avoid problematic releases like iOS 17.

Apple, however, is committed to keeping its devices current, discontinuing support for older iOS versions to prevent users from reverting to previous updates. According to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple has introduced a system enabling iPhone updates without activating the device while it's still sealed in its box. Apple Stores now employ a "pad-like device" allowing employees to update unopened iPhones.

This method ensures customers receive up-to-date devices, addressing bugs and issues associated with initial iOS releases. Despite its intrusiveness, this updating method guarantees bug-free devices for users. Currently limited to iPhones, this system might expand to other Apple products in the future. Customers can expect to benefit from this system at Apple Stores before the end of 2023.
